Environmental Specialist - Wetland Permitting

Summary:
GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist to support environmental permitting and field reviews (wetland and waterway determination/delineation, rare species habitat assessment, invasive species identification, etc.) in Wisconsin. The position will be located in GAI’s Oshkosh, Wisconsin office, but consideration will be given for qualified candidates living in the Stevens Point or Wausau areas to work remotely.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct environmental reviews for projects in the planning and development phases, with a focus on federal, state, and local regulations and permitting.
  • Determine environmental permit needs for projects and prepare associated permit applications. 
  • Complete endangered resource habitat assessments and reviews for projects.
  • Conduct wetland delineations, wetland determinations, endangered resource field reviews, and other environmental field studies for projects located primarily in Wisconsin.
  • Interface with government agencies, clients, and construction contractors regarding field identification of sensitive resources, interpretation of environmental permits and regulations, and compliance concerns.
  • Assist with the coordination of interdisciplinary work teams and overall task management of environmental project reviews, permit applications, and reports.
  • Provide status and progress reports to clients, the project team, and management.
  • Assist with mentorship and direction of junior environmental staff.
  • Other duties assigned by Supervisor.
 

Qualifications:
  • MS or BS in environmental related sciences
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with a focus on environmental field reviews and permitting. Specific experience in the consulting industry is preferred.
  • Must be adept at interpreting environmental permit requirements and applicable environmental regulations. The ideal candidate will have experience with federal, state, and local wetland, waterway, floodplain, shoreland, and erosion control regulations and permitting in Wisconsin. 
  • Must be able to prepare and complete reports summarizing field procedures, observations, and results.
  • Must have experience reading and interpreting construction plans.
  • Work is expected to be split between field based work and office based work. Must be willing to work flexible hours and overtime.
  • Strong technical writing ability.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work for oneself and junior environmental staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to travel, including overnight trips.
  • A current Driver's License is required.
 

Physical Demands and/or Other Job Information (if applicable):
  • Ability to hike moderate distances through unimproved terrain, utility rights-of-way, in remote areas, etc.
  • Ability to hear and visualize potential hazards during fieldwork or site visit situations.
